16 December 2024 – Online – 10:00 – 13:00 (Barcelona time) – Public transport is essential for millions worldwide, but it remains a site of vulnerability for women and girls. A 2023 survey by the Arab Barometer found that 45% of women in the MENA region feel unsafe using public transport, and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) reports that up to 55% of women in the EU have experienced harassment in public spaces. This webinar and workshop will address these safety challenges by bringing together experts from governments, international organizations, and the transport sector to discuss best practices and initiatives aimed at ensuring safer public transport systems for women and girls.
Within the framework of the 16 days of activism against Violence against Women and Girls, this webinar will feature speakers from international transport agencies, government representatives, transport companies, and civil society organizations. They will present current safety data, share government and corporate safety initiatives, and highlight community advocacy efforts. Later on, a 2-hours workshop will provide an interactive platform for practical scenario analysis, group discussions, and the development of strategies to improve safety in public transport.
Specific objective:
The event aims to raise awareness about safety issues faced by women in public transport, share best practices, and foster cross-sector collaboration to create safer public transport systems across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
